A savant is a gifted magic user able to directly manipulate the flows of aether without relying on runes.
Savants initially present as aethersick until they are exposed to a magical rune (usually by accident), at which point their true nature is revealed. Savants are extraordinarily rare and have historically only appeared at times when the forces of chaos and order were severely out of balance.
